5S is simple, right? On the surface, the 5S process in a lean transformation is like cleaning out your garage every spring. You get rid of everything you don't need, brush out the cobwebs, and maybe even give it a fresh coat of paint. Then, you put everything back where it belongs. You've just completed the first three S's: Sort, Shine and Set in order. Now pull out that newly accessible lawn chair, grab a cold one and bask in a sense of accomplishment. You're done!

Well, not quite yet. Unfortunately, most 5S initiatives are like that annual garage cleaning. The vast majority of time and energy is spent on the first three S's.
